Pool safety is no joking matter. Don’t be a dummy…learn CPR
If you came across someone unconscious in a backyard pool would you know what to do?
Could you save your child’s life?
Recent research conducted by Poolwerx reveals that 75% of people surveyed felt they did not have the necessary CPR skills to save a life in an emergency . . . 37% said they didn't know where to get training and another 34% said their partner knew CPR so they didn't have to! Hard to find the humour in those excuses!
But don't worry. This April 1st is April Pools Day and Red Cross will host a 20 minute hands on CPR demonstration at Poolwerx Hamilton.
It only takes a few minutes to learn how to save a life.
A child is four times more likely to survive a drowning if their parents know CPR and start immediately!
Practicing on a specially designed CPR dummy is one of the best ways to learn resuscitation – any fool can do it! So to kick-start April Pools Day, Laurie Lawrence, with his daughter Emma from Kids Alive have put together step-by-step instructional videos on how to administer CPR using these ‘clever’ dummies.
Please take the time to view them – it’s five minutes out of your life that just might save someone else’s!
Tammy Richie- Saved her son Carson
Tammy Richie, mother of three, knows exactly how important CPR is because she resuscitated her son Carson, after she found him face down in the pool when he was 16 months old.
“It was eight years ago but reliving the moment of finding my son lifeless lying face down in the pool still reduces me to tears to this day.
I am so passionate about spreading the message about what a vital skill CPR is.
Everyone should know how to do it. I don’t even want to contemplate what Carson’s fate might have been had I not been skilled to revive him.”
Don’t be a fool around the pool
Knowing how to resuscitate is vital in a drowning emergency, however it’s wiser to prevent it from occurring in the first place. That’s why Poolwerx is right behind Laurie Lawrence’s Kids Alive Do the Five program.
By reinforcing five simple, well-recognised steps, the program’s goal is to reduce the number of drownings in this country to zero:
- Fence the pool
- Shut the gate
- Teach your kids to swim – it’s great!
- Supervise – watch your mate
- Learn how to resuscitate.

Pool safety can’t be faked
There are many other steps you can do to increase safety around your pool. We’ve put together an easy to understand pool safety checklist to ensure you don’t have to fake it this April Pools Day.
Print it out and stick it on the fridge so you’re always reminded about the importance of pool safety in your home, or visit your local Poolwerx store for your free copy and water safety DVD. Want to buy a CPR chart now, click here.
We kid you not
Why is Poolwerx so passionate about spreading the pool safety message? Like Laurie Lawrence and his Kids Alive Do the Five program we want to see drownings in this country drop to zero. However we’re still a long way off.
Statistics compiled by the Royal Lifesaving Society show that children under the age of five accounted for well over half of the reported near drownings in home swimming pools. That’s a lot of children needing to be saved.
And according to the World Health Organisation, drowning is among the 10 leading causes of death for children and young people world wide.
These are staggering statistics when you consider that most drownings are easily preventable. We must do better, and with initiatives like April Pools Day we believe we can.
